Planning a day full of fun in Gallia County

If you’ve ever heard someone say “there’s nothing to do here,” you should look again. For a community our size, Gallia County punches far above its weight in terms of activities that will satisfy the most enthusiastic outdoorsman, the budding athlete, and the person looking just to unwind and enjoy some sunshine.

Here’s a small sample of what your days could look like when you move to Gallia County.

Historic Charm and Exploration

  • Enjoy a picnic in Gallipolis City Park, the original settlement a group of French immigrants built into Gallipolis. You’ll surrounded by the beauty of mature trees, and the famous Bandstand in the center of the park. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll along 1st Avenue, soaking in the historic charm of both the homes and the mighty Ohio River. On Sundays, the Gallipolis Farmer’s Market is set up with local produce and crafters.

  • Afterward, immerse yourself in the rich history of Gallia County with a visit to the Our House Tavern Museum to learn about our fantastic French heritage, then head over to the Bossard Memorial Library for one of their special events. From book readings to craft workshops to museum pop-ups, there's always something for everyone. Down the street from the library is the Gallipolis Freight Station Museum — a love letter to Gallia County’s strong railroading industry of the 19th and 20th centuries.

  • The Ariel Opera House is a spectacular place to catch a show. This opera house has been restored to its original state and is home to The Ohio Valley Symphony, which is the only professional orchestra in the area.

Go RedStorm!

  • Cheer on the RedStorm during a visit to the University of Rio Grande for an athletic event. From more classic sports like basketball and soccer, to something more unique like rugby or archery, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy Rio’s athletics scene.

  • After the game, head out for a short hike or bike ride at the Gatewood Trail System, a mountain-biking and hiking hotspot located at historic Bob Evans Farm in Rio Grande. Then, indulge your taste buds at the Rio Farmer’s Market, where you can sample fresh produce and artisanal goods from local vendors.

  • Stop by the Madog Center for Welsh Studies on campus — Rio Grande in the midst of one of the largest Welsh-American settlements in North America, the Madog Center for Welsh Studies has established a Resource Center and Library. The activities and programs of the Madog Center help to support the preservation of the Welsh language and culture, the arts, academics, the Welsh-American connection, and promotes local Welsh-American activities.

Outdoor Adventures and Wine Tasting

  • Embark on an outdoor adventure at Tycoon Lake, where you can drop your kayak, canoe, or boat into the lake’s tranquil waters. Although this is a no-wake lake, gas-powered boats are permitted. You’re close to your next great catch!

  • Savor the flavors of Gallia County’s two local wineries with a visit to Twisted Vine Family Winery or Merry Family Winery. Both produce their wines on site, have incredible outdoor seating overlooking their vineyards, and have a number of food options available to make it a fantastic afternoon.

Active Pursuits and Relaxation

  • Get your heart pumping with a visit to the Hike & Bike Trail, where you can enjoy a scenic 8-mile ride (or more!) or leisurely stroll through the countryside. Along the trail, hop off to practice your swing at Bowman’s Driving Range, or cool off at the Gallipolis City Pool, where you can lounge poolside and soak up the sun.

  • Join your fellow athletes for an adult-league game at The Root Sports & Fitness Center. Whether it’s basketball, indoor or sand volleyball, or indoor soccer, this fitness center has options for every athlete to let their competitive spirit fly. If you’ve got kiddos, there are weekend youth leagues most of the year at The Root.

Sports, Aviation, and Nature

  • While you play a round at Cliffside Golf Course, you’ll probably notice planes buzzing overhead. Head to Gallia-Meigs Regional Airport after your round to watch the planes fly in and out against the backdrop of the river valley.

  • For a more rugged adventure, head out to the Crown City Wildlife Area for hunting on public lands. This is one of the few locations in Southeastern Ohio with a wild quail population.

It’s easy to pack your days full of a variety of activities in Gallia County — and as you can tell, there’s a little something for everyone here!
