Walkable downtown

Known by many as the “Old French City,” Gallia County’s seat, Gallipolis, is a standout among Ohio River towns. Its spectacular Public Square and Garden Lots Historic District overlooking the Ohio River draws in people from across the country — especially during the holidays when it’s time for “Gallipolis in Lights” to shine.

Within walking distance of downtown are multiple restaurants, grocery stores, antique & craft shops, a public library, hike & bike trail, and the Ariel Opera House. You don’t find many small town downtowns with this much to offer!

College town

Not to be confused with the river, Rio Grande (Rye-O-Grand) is home to the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College. The University and Community College is the heartbeat of the Village, with sporting events, student-led performances, and walking and mountain biking paths surrounding campus.

Rio Grande is also the birthplace of American restaurant chain Bob Evans. Bob Evans’ family farm is just off campus and the annual Farm Festival brings in thousands of people each Fall.

Gallia County’s scenic rolling hills and secluded hollers give families plenty of space to roam and explore — something city life can’t offer.

We’re far enough from big cities to avoid ridiculous home prices, traffic, and non-stop construction, but still close enough to enjoy easy day trips to larger cities or catch a flight from an international airport.

US-35 cuts through the heart of Gallia County, connecting easily to Charleston, Huntington, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

  • University of Rio Grande & Rio Grande Community College

    America’s only combined private university and public community college, founded in 1876. Known simply at “Rio” locally, the institution brings in students from around the globe and offers everything from short-term certificates to master’s degrees.

  • Gallipolis City Schools

    Gallipolis City Schools has three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Gallia Academy High School is among the newest school buildings in the County, and the addition of a new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) facility on-campus will prepare students for future careers.

    Gallia County Local Schools has four elementary schools, one 6-8 middle school, one combined 6-12 middle/high school, and one 9-12 grade high school. The district serves more than 2,700 students across Gallia County.

  • Ohio Valley Christian School

    Ohio Valley Christian School is a PreK-12, non-public, chartered school. Students from OVCS consistently score above the state and nation averages on the ACT and SAT exams, and 90% of graduates attend a four-year college or university.
